The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) in collaboration with Delhi Police conducted a major raid in East Delhi, uncovering an illegal bird trafficking operation that had been running for over two years.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of December 27th, led to the rescue of over 200 birds including parrots, macaws, and several endangered species. The birds were found in extremely poor conditions, kept in cramped cages without adequate food or water.
“This is one of the largest bird trafficking operations we have busted in Delhi,” stated WCCB Director Tilotama Varma. “Many of these birds are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, and trafficking them carries severe penalties.”
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the operation. Preliminary investigations reveal the network had connections across multiple states and was smuggling birds from Southeast Asian countries.
The rescued birds are being examined by veterinarians and will be rehabilitated before being released into their natural habitats where possible. Those from foreign countries will be housed in appropriate sanctuaries.
